German Tree Care Conference impress with a varied programme – trees and the question of liability, tree diseases and the care of fruit trees

28 January 2025

In May, and it's not just the trees that are bursting into new leaf – the tree care industry is also flourishing in Augsburg, where the German Tree Care Conference will take place. From the 6th to the 8th of May, Europe’s largest conference on tree care will feature a dynamic programme with over 40 expert lectures and hands-on demonstrations. On the second day, discussions will centre on liability issues in relation to damage caused by tree roots. The final day will focus on tree diseases and concerns over biodiversity. At the request of many attendees, fruit tree care will also be a major topic this year, with ample attention given to the subject throughout the event.

Who is responsible for damage caused by tree roots?

This question frequently arises in practice but can be tricky to answer legally. For instance, what happens when tree roots cause bulges in pavements or bike paths that lead to accidents? Or when roots extend into neighbouring built-up or agricultural land, causing damage? Determining liability is key in these situations. During the German Tree Care Conference, recent case law will be reviewed, offering a clear, practical overview that’s easy to understand, even for those without a legal background.

Pests in the Spotlight: Tree Diseases on the Final Day

The 2025 German Tree Care Conference in Augsburg will also shine a light on various tree diseases and pests. On the third day of the conference, the focus will be on successful strategies for managing harmful organisms such as the Asian Longhorned Beetle, as well as emerging threats. Special attention will be given to pests like the Leopard and the Carpenter moths, where infestations have surged in recent years for various reasons. This surge has significant implications for tree inspections, care, and overall tree management.

A New Challenge: Oak Dieback

In response to recent developments, the organizers of the German Tree Care Conference have added a last-minute lecture on a new form of oak dieback, a bacterial disease that is becoming increasingly prevalent. Oaks affected by this condition first show signs of slime flow on the trunk, followed by noticeable thinning of the crown. With some trees already succumbing to this illness, a dedicated lecture on May the 8th will explore how to address this new challenge alongside other harmful organisms in the Hamburg area.

Fruit Tree Care in Theory and Practice

On Day 2 of the Tree Care Event in Augsburg, fruit tree care will take centre stage, fulfilling a long-standing request from attendees. The expert input will be provided by the Fruit Tree Care Association (Fachverband Obstgehölzpflege), which will also host practical demonstrations of fruit tree pruning in the outdoor area for the first time.

For a complete schedule of the Conference and ticketing information, visit www.deutsche-baumpflegetage.de.The 2025 Yearbook of Arboriculture (Jahrbuch der Baumpflege), which compiles all the expert lectures from this year’s event, is also available for order. Conference attendees will receive a free copy of the yearbook upon arrival in Augsburg.
